Cambodian King sings high praises for late Chairman Mao

    PHNOM PENH, Dec. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- "Chairman Mao Zedong is one of the most respected and admired 'giants' in worldwide history where his ineffaceable and everlasting name will always be remembered," said Cambodia's King Norodom Sihanouk. 

    The King made the remarks in an exclusive written interview with Xinhua on the occasion of the commemoration of the 110th birthday of late Chinese leader Mao Zedong, which falls on Dec. 26this year. 

    Sihanouk spoke highly of Mao Zedong's outstanding contributions to the founding of the People's Republic of China, saying Mao is "the greatest hero of the multi-millennium history of China" who led the Chinese people to liberate from feudalism, colonialism and imperialism and "to make China a sovereign, united, powerful state." 

    King Norodom Sihanouk met with Chairman Mao for several times which had made strong impression on him. The King said he paid "the most fervent, respectful, admiring and grateful homage" to Mao. 

    It is China's Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai have "taken the historic initiative to establish, as far back as 1955, most friendly and closeness relations with the Khmer Kingdom," the King recalled. 

    "In the international arena, Chairman Mao Zedong had wonderfully achieved great triumphs of the openness policy ...as well as the five principles of the peaceful coexistence." 

    The 81-year-old Cambodian King, who came to China every year for his routine health check, always supported Chinese people in international affairs and has established good friendly relations with China's old and new leadership, which had laid a solid foundation for the future development of the bilateral relations between the two countries.
