Cuban first vice president welcomes CPC delegation

HAVANA, June 23 -- Cuban First Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura welcomed here on Monday a delegation of the Communist Party of China (CPC), led by He Guoqiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of CPC's Central Committee.

Machado and He talked about issues of interests for both peoples, who continue developing the socialism in both countries under the difficult circumstances of today's world, a statement released in Havana said.

He, who is on a four-day goodwill visit to Cuba, made reference to the devastating earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

He thanked the support of the Cuban party, the government and the people for sending the medical brigade to the disaster zone.

He said he is convinced that with the joint efforts of both sides his visit will be successful. In a previous written declaration he said the aim of deepening mutual understanding, the consolidation of mutual friendship, the political trust and the cooperation will be accomplished.

He also made reference to the preparation for the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games.

During the meetings in the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Machado said he was sure that the Chinese people will recover promptly from the consequences of the Sichuan earthquake and other natural disasters.

During his stay in Cuba until June 25, He will meet with leaders of PCC and will visit Cuban centers of economic and scientific interest.

Chief of the International Department of the Central Committee of CPC Wang Jiarui, Chinese ambassador to Cuba Zhao Rongxian and Cuban ambassador to China Carlos Miguel Pereira also attended the meeting.

Before the meeting, He also made a floral offer in front of the monument to the Cuban hero Jose Marti in the Revolution Plaza in Havana.

He arrived here Sunday. Cuba is the first leg of his four-nation visit that will also take him to Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil and Angola.

Cuba and China established diplomatic ties in 1960 and currently they keep a close relation of economic cooperation and a high level of exchanges between the two parties and governments.
