Li Changchun meets former Tanzanian president

  BEIJING, Sept. 12 -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Li Changchun told visiting former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa on Wednesday that China would like to raise bilateral ties to a new level.

  China and Tanzania have become reliable friends as they have expanded cooperation in all fields and coordinated in international affairs, said Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

  Li expressed appreciation of Tanzania's support for China on the issues involving Taiwan and human rights.

  Li told Mkapa, also former chairman of the Revolutionary Party of Tanzania (RPT), that the exchanges between the CPC and RPT have made unique contribution to the relationship of the two countries, voicing his hope to further promote the party-to-party relations.

  Mkapa said no matter what changes take place, the friendship between Tanzania and China will remain unchanged, and Tanzania's friendly policy toward China is consistent.

  He expressed appreciation of the stance of the CPC and Chinese government in respecting the options made by African countries themselves.

  Mkapa acted as Tanzanian president from 1995 to 2005.
