BEIJING, Dec. 19 -- Xi Jinping, a member of the Standing Committee of the
Political Bureau of the Central Committee of Communist Party of China (CPC), met
with Britain's opposition Conservative Party leader David Cameron here on
Wednesday and called for the two sides to boost friendly cooperation.
Highlighting the comprehensive development of Sino-British relations, Xi said
China and Britain shared common interests and significant responsibility to
safeguard peace in the world and to promote global prosperity.
As both were permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and big
economies in the world, China would make concerted efforts to push forward its
ties with the United Kingdom, Xi told Cameron.
Speaking on inter-party relations, Xi spoke highly of the efforts the two sides
have made to improve ties, expressing his hope to increase mutual understanding
and friendship.
Cameron was here at the invitation of the International Department of the
Central Committee of the CPC. He said his party and Britain attached great
importance to ties with China. The two countries shared comprehensive common
interests on many international and regional issues.
He said Britain and China were important trading partners. In addition, the
Conservative Party and Britain would always be a voice for free trade, openness
and for further strengthening trade and mutual investment.
Cameron suggested the two countries should make joint efforts to tackle the
problem of climate change as it was "one of the biggest challenges mankind
faces".
