BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- It is the common responsibility for Asian parties to strengthen regional cooperation and promote sustainable development in Asia, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said Sunday.

"Strengthening regional cooperation, safeguarding regional security, and promoting sustainable development and common prosperity in Asia are beneficial to all Asian countries and political parties and are their common responsibility," said Liu Yunshan, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

He made the remarks at the closing ceremony of the Third International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP).

Delegates of 81 political parties and organizations from 35 countries attended the meeting, which began Friday in Beijing. It was the first of its kind hosted by the CPC.

"Multilateral cooperation is an effective way to preserve regional security, and the final objective of Asia's security is common security," Liu said.

Asian countries should act constructively, trust each other, and establish and uphold a new conception of security based on mutual trust and benefit, equality and cooperation, he added.

They should explore new models for regional cooperation on security issues and create a regional and international environment of peace, stability and security beneficial for the development of all countries.

"Every country should choose its own road of development and development models on the basis of its own national conditions," he said.

Asian countries should conform to the trend of the times and make the best of opportunities that present themselves, he added.

"They should consolidate and deepen existing mechanisms for cooperation, explore new forms of cooperation, expand the scope of their cooperation and raise its level on the basis of the principles of equality, mutual benefit, gradual progress and openness," Liu said.
