Asian political leaders propose "Asian Union"
2004-09-06

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Some delegates to the Third International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) proposed that Asian countries establish a unified regional cooperation mechanism, something like "Asian Union," to achieve regional integration.

Given Asia is confronted with increasing challenges resulted from the process of globalization, Kim Chang Hyun of the Democratic Labor Party of the Republic of Korea said at the conference that ended here on Sunday that Asia is in want of "a multi national collaboration mechanism" to stabilize the relations among Asian countries.

Suematsu Yoshinori of the Democratic Party of Japan said Asian countries should set up a new kind of framework, like "Asian Commission", to further develop free trade and economy, and that in the future will possibly help create a single Asian currency system.

He also called on Asian countries to ensure the security and stability of the region in a mature manner through the new framework.

An Asia-wide union similar to the European Union should be established, which aims to achieve the stability and prosperity in Asia through sustainable development, said Chhabildas Mehta, leader of the Indian Nationalist Congress Party.

He echoed the Japanese delegate's call for the creation of a single Asian currency.

Karl-Peter Schoenfisch from Germany's Hanns Seidel Foundation, said the ICAPP can help contribute to Asia's cultural diversity, regional integration and the creation of a common community.

With regional integration as a major trend in today's world, Asian countries have long explored ways of cooperation in the region.

The ultimate goal of the mechanism for multilateral cooperation between Asian parties was to create an "Asian Community" or "Asian Union" of liberty, friendship and common prosperity, said Jose De Venecia, speaker of the Philippine House of Representatives, at
the 2002 ICAPP in Bangkok, Thailand.

Delegates of 81 political parties and organizations from 35 countries participated in the conference hosted by the Communist Party of China. The first two ICAPP conferences were held in Manila, the Philippines, in September 2000, and Bangkok in November 2002.
