2004-09-06

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The third International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) concluded here Sunday with a declaration passed.

Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the organizing committee of the conference, delivered a speech at the closing ceremony.

Referring to the original ideas and constructive suggestions raised by the delegates, Liu said:" it is the common goal of all Asian political parties and politicians to promote the healthy development of the ICAPP and give full play to the unique role of Asian political parties in promoting regional cooperation."

"It is beneficial, as well as common responsibility, to all Asian countries and political parties, to strengthen regional cooperation, safeguard regional security and promote continuous development and common prosperity in Asia," he said.

Liu believed that the political parties of Asian countries all expect the international exchanges and cooperation among the Asian political parties to be strengthened in spirit of mutual respect, equal exchanges, consensus expansion and common development.

The Third ICAPP has injected new vigor into international exchanges among political parties of Asian countries, says the Beijing Declaration.

Asian political parties shoulder a historical responsibility for developing their national economies, safeguarding social stability and promoting the development of democracy and legal systems, according to the declaration.

As all the countries in Asia progress toward modernization, their political parties should constantly adjust to the requirements of the development of the times, it says.

Prior to the closing ceremony, ICAPP delegates held a signing activity for peace.

Delegates from over 80 political parties or organizations attended the three-day conference. With the theme of "Exchanges, Cooperation and Development", the participants exchanged views on regional security and multilateral cooperation, economic growth and social progress and political party building and national development, and reached consensus on wide-range of issues.

Initiated in 2000, the first two ICAPP conferences were held in the Philippines and Thailand in September 2000 and November 2002, respectively. The CPC sent representatives to the previous two meetings.
