Flower-basket-laying ceremonies were held at four memorial sites in both China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) before the meeting to mark the 70th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) entering the DPRK to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea held on October 23, 2020. Flower baskets were laid at the CPV martyrs’ cemetery in Shenyang and the memorial tower in the Memorial Hall of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea in Dandong in China’s Liaoning Province, and the Friendship Tower in Pyongyang and a cemetery for CPV martyrs in Hoechang County in the DPRK. The flower baskets were sent in the name of Chinese President Xi Jinping, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC).

At 8:45 a.m. on October 23, a ceremony was held at the CPV martyrs’ cemetery in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. The flower basket sent in the name of President Xi Jinping, also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) was placed right in front of the martyr’s monument. The red ribbon of the flower basket reads “The Martyrs of Chinese People’s Volunteers Are Immortal!”

The ceremony was attended by Zhang Youxia, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Chairman of the CMC, leaders of relevant departments of the CPC Central Committee, the government and military, the CPC Liaoning Provincial Committee and the People’s Government of Liaoning Province, and responsible officials of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the People’s Armed Police Force (PAPF) in Shenyang, representatives of soldiers who fought the war, families of martyrs and the PLA and PAPF soldiers, members in state organs, and representatives from all walks of life. All the attendees paid tribute to the CPV martyrs, looking at the martyrs’ monument with reverence and presenting flowers to the five main tombs of martyrs.

At 9 a.m. on October 23, a similar ceremony of presenting flower baskets in the name of President Xi Jinping, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the CMC was held at the memorial tower in the Memorial Hall of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea in Dandong. Zhang Guoqing, Secretary of the CPC Liaoning Provincial Committee, members of relevant departments of the CPC Central Committee, government and military, the CPC Liaoning Provincial Committee and the People’s Government of Liaoning Province, and the Liaoning Provincial Military Region and the PLA stationed in Dandong were present.

On October 21, two ceremonies were held in the DPRK to present flower baskets in the name of President Xi Jinping, also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the CMC, at the Friendship Tower in Pyongyang and the cemetery for CPV martyrs in Hoechang County. The two ceremonies were attended by Li Jinjun, Chinese Ambassador to the DPRK, all members of the Chinese Embassy in the DPRK, and representatives of other Chinese in the DPRK.

Recently, various events have also been held in the DPRK to mark the anniversary. On October 21, Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the DPRK presented a flower basket at the cemetery for CPV martyrs in Hoechang County. On the same day, the DPRK side laid flower baskets to the Friendship Tower in Pyongyang in the name of Kim Jong Un, and sent flowers baskets to the CPV martyrs’ cemetery in Shenyang and the memorial tower in Dandong. Relevant departments of the WPK Central Committee, the DPRK State Affairs Commission and military also presented flower baskets at the two memorial sites in Pyongyang and Hoechang.
