Beijing, April 1st—Liu Haixing, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee (IDCPC), met here today with Manuel Cansado de Carvalho, Portuguese Ambassador to China.

Liu welcomed Manuel Cansado de Carvalho on his assumption of the new post in China. He said, China-Portugal relations enjoy a long history. The two sides properly resolved the Macao issue, setting a model for the friendly settlement of historical issues through consultations. Over more than two decades since the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, cooperation across various fields has yielded fruitful results. The CPC stands ready to strengthen exchanges and dialogue with major Portuguese political parties, jointly implement the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and Portuguese leaders, and promote the steady and sustained development of China-Portugal relations and China-Europe relations. During the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), China will further expand high-level opening up and advance high-quality development, and stands ready to share development opportunities with countries around the world, including Portugal.
Manuel Cansado de Carvalho said, Portugal and China enjoy a long-standing friendship, and Portugal is pleased to see the success of the "one country, two systems" policy in Macao, which has become an important bridge for Portugal-China cooperation. Portugal adheres to the one-China principle and is willing to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with China across various fields. Chinese enterprises are welcome to invest and do business in Portugal. Amid a turbulent international landscape, both Portugal and China uphold multilateralism, and Portugal hopes that China will play a greater role in addressing international issues.
