BEIJING, May 29 -- Wang Jiarui, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met in Beijing today with David Lampton, former president of the National Committee on US-China Relations and director of China Studies at Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins University, and other renowned American experts and scholars on China-US relations. The two sides exchanged views on China-US relations.

Wang said that China and the US, as the largest developing and developed country and both being permanent members of the UN Security Council, have important responsibilities for world peace and stability, and share extensive common interests. The two sides should further expand mutually beneficial cooperation in economy, trade and investment, and strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional affairs, so as to consolidate and advance China-US cooperative partnership and develop a new type of relations between major countries.

American scholars said that conflicts between US and China are not inevitable and that the American government and other sectors generally respond positively to the concept of a new type of major-power relations. The two sides should strengthen friendly exchanges and pragmatic cooperation at all levels, especially between local regions, properly control differences, develop sound interaction in the Asia Pacific, and constantly enrich the concept of a new type of major-power relations between China and US.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of shared interests.
