Santiago, August 7th—Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, met here today with José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) at the headquarters of the ECLAC.
Liu said, the ECLAC has made important contributions to the economic and social development of Latin America and played a positive role in building consensus among Latin American countries. The Chinese side appreciates the ECLAC's attention to the development of China-Latin America relations, and hopes that the ECLAC will continue to play a bridging role in China-Latin America cooperation. Profound changes unseen in a century are unfolding rapidly across the world. The Chinese side supports true multilateralism and supports the United Nations in playing a central role in international affairs. The Chinese side is willing to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations and the ECLAC to implement the three major global initiatives and safeguard world peace and development.
José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs reviewed his experience of exchanges with the Chinese side, spoke highly of China's tremendous development achievements since reform and opening up, and praised China for practicing multilateralism and supporting the cause of the United Nations. He said that President Xi Jinping's major proposals such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the three major global initiatives provide important ideas and solutions for solving issues such as global development, security, civilization, etc. Latin America boasts diverse culture and is full of vitality. Cooperation between Latin America and China is in the common interests of both sides. The ECLAC is willing to play its role to boost the development of Latin American-China relations.
