Lu Kang Attends Opening Ceremony of Beijing Forum of the Second World Conference of Sinologists

On October 30th, the Beijing Forum of the Second World Conference of Sinologists was held by Beijing Language and Culture University under the sponsorship of the Chinese Association for International Understanding. Lu Kang, Vice-minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Erik Solheim, former UN Under-Secretary-General, delivered a speech via video link. About 500 people, including sinologists from more than 40 countries, teachers and students from Beijing Language and Culture University and other universities, Duan Peng, President of Beijing Language and Culture University, and Emilio Jose Ramon, Argentine Congressman, attended the forum.

Lu said, the forum is an important supporting event for the Second World Conference of Sinologists. It provides an important academic platform for implementing the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important congratulatory letter to the Third Dialogue on Exchanges and Mutual Learning Among Civilizations and the First World Conference of Sinologists, giving full play to the role of Sinologists from all countries as messengers of the integration of Chinese and foreign civilizations, and promoting the high-quality development of world sinology. We are willing to work with sinologists from all countries to adhere to openness and inclusiveness, promote exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations; stay committed to pioneering and innovation, promote the high-quality development of world sinology; enhance interactions and integration of diversified cultures and forge closer people-to-people bonds.

Duan said, sinologists have helped the world better understand Chinese civilization and Chinese modernization through their unique discourse system and profound academic accomplishments. Beijing Language and Culture University will work with sinologists from all over the world to actively contribute to the integration of Chinese and foreign civilizations and the promotion of world modernization.

Solheim and Ramon highly praised the long history and profound heritage of Chinese civilization, and called on all countries to respect the diversity of civilizations. They hoped sinologists from all countries would play an important role in promoting mutual learning between Chinese and other civilizations as well as communication and understanding among peoples of all countries.

Three thematic sessions and five sub-forums focusing on topics such as strengthening the construction of the world's sinology discipline and giving full play to the role of sinologists as messengers of civilization will be held. During these events, participants will engage in in-depth exchanges of academic viewpoints and bring together the strength of sinologists to implement the Global Civilization Initiative and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
